When preparing for the Oscars red carpet as a stylist, it is always important to have a handle on the seasons trends and mold those subtly into each individual's style and figure flattering ideal gown. For 2014, some of the hottest trends include those risqué see-through panels you've been noticing on almost nude celebrities, lace, florals, and color blocking.

While lace and color blocking appear more self explanatory, peekaboo panels and florals must be done with care, especially when being considered for The Oscars. You are able to take more risks with The Golden Globes but for THE Academy, it's important to opt for standout, flattering looks to be pulled into the best dressed lists. Recently Paris Hilton stepped out in a dress that was more boo than peek. For The Oscars, we adapt those open illusion panels to side shaping cutouts, keeping a safe distance from those more risqué areas of the body. For florals, you would never want a client to walk the red carpet looking like Kim Kardashian in your granmother's drapes or upholstered sofa cushion. Instead, I look for watercolor looking florals, bright pops of color amongst a black backdrop, or florals done in panels as opposed to an all over print. These artful adaptations of 2014's hottest trends can make make the difference of being on the best or the offensive side of Joan Rivers' Fashion Police recap.

Speaking of the Fashion Police, Bitch Stole My Look teaches us an important lesson in copycat styling. From designers to stylists, it is ever important not to duplicate looks to avoid the most unflattering comparisons; in this instance there is always a clear cut loser. For this very reason, many fashion designers will only lend one dress per event making the competition amongst dress stealing stylists even more fierce. When considering options and contenders for various red carpet goers, think: who wore what during last seasons' red carpet parties, think outside the box, and opt for something you or your stylist are 100% confident with so if the most unfortunate duplicate look does occur, win or lose, you know you rocked it. This year I had my own Bitch Stole My Look moment when Lena Dunham stepped out in a "copycat" marigold yellow dress from Zac Posen to my own Badgley Mishka 2013 selection. This look was both "been there, done that," and a lesson to young starlets to recruit the help of the professionals instead of working directly with a male designer. "Zac [Posen] told me to make an S with my body. That's what I was told to do and let's hope an even okay moment arises from it," said the Girls star. The result was a childish hunched look which seemed to shrink her stature and become engulfed in the mermaid gown. Could this gown have been styled better with the advise of a seasoned stylist? Ironically Kim Kardashian's train wreck floral was also the result of a skipped stylist, straight from the designer's selection. Keep in mind these designers are used to designing for pin straight models; us girls with figures need to adapt their trends to fit our own style.
information.

specialized topics. People in any stage of the disease can communicate their
fears and concerns. They can contact others who have dealt with the same
emotions, and find a community of people who know what it’s like to await a
Information on Breast Cancer
Another way the internet has changed breast cancer its ability to provide

easier to understand treatment options, side effects, current research and

Treatment Support
The internet has also given breast cancer patients the ability to easily
communicate with others undergoing treatment. Forums, chat rooms and support

helpful information on dealing with the side effects, both emotional and

Up-To-Date Research
The internet has also made cancer research more widely accessible. In the past,
patients with breast cancer could only get information on treatments, trials,
new medications and cutting-edge technologies through doctors or libraries.
Today, you can find updates on experimental treatments at research facilities
around the world by searching online. Many non-profit breast cancer foundations
offer this information on their sites.
Ellie Fund Guest Stylist Christina K Pierce shares her take on great ways to wear pink this month!

With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, it is a
perfect opportunity to pull out the feminine pink and blush tones in your
closet. Though most women love pink, many struggle with finding ways to wear the
hue without looking overly “cutesy” or like their childhood Barbie. Here are
some tips on how to wear pink in ways that will keep you looking fresh and
trendy this fall season:

Pink suede is a great way to add texture and a pop of
femininity to any outfit. It pairs great with any neutral base such as beige or
brown and even compliments navy and winter white. your footwear is a great way to spice up a desk to dinner outfit while grabbing
drinks with your girlfriends.

A more contemporary way to wear pink and incorporate some

Ellie Fund patient update that makes us smile! At least once a week (if not more) we receive a thank you card, call or email from a patient or family member who we have helped. This is hands down one of the best parts about coming to work and doing what we do. We are also so lucky because so many people want to give back and help the Ellie Fund when they are able.

We want to thank all of those patients who share their stories with us and wish all the families we help the very best.

Here is a wonderful update from Michele, a woman that we helped by providing grocery and gas cards, as well as prepared and healthy meals through our Dish and Deliver Program.

Well, yesterday I said goodbye to my radiation family and friends! It's hard to believe I am finally done. The staff there was so wonderful, so friendly and positive, from the receptionists to the radiation therapists. I still have to continue with the "My Girls" cream for at least 2 weeks, which makes me wonder if I am that radioactive inside!!It seemed strange today not going there. But this phase of treatment is over. Next I have follow up bloodwork, scans, mammogram and doctors visits. They are spread out through the end of June which is so nice not to have to go to the hospital every day. I know it sounds strange but during radiation I lost 6 pounds as with chemo I was up 1. So now I need to focus on increasing my strenght, endurance AND weight.

There are SO many people I owe thanks to. Fighting something like breast cancer certainly takes a village. I am not sure why it is so hard for us to accept help sometimes, thinking we can do it all no matter what. It might have taken a while, but once I accepted help (and stopped feeling guilty about it!) the every day things were so much easier. I used to be the Queen of thank you notes but that has certainly fallen by the wayside! Please know for those of you that set up housecleaning services, dinners, flowers, gift cards, rides for Nicholas, constant cards and well wishes just how much they were appreciated. Although it might not have seemed like a big deal to you please know how big a deal it was to me. It was so nice not to have to think/worry about a dirty house or dinner or how Nicholas was going to get to a hockey or baseball practice. (That just made me realize that this journey has gone through 2 sport seasons!)

I also want to ackwowledge the Ellie Fund and its' coordinator Gail Fine. They have been SO generous with food/gas gift cards and Dish and Deliver meals (which were delicious!) It all just made life a little easier when going through a tough time. It also took a little pressure off of Paul and Nicholas who were forced into extra duty! And how can I thank Kim enough and her family for letting me borrow her so often! She has held my hand thru all my treatments, listened to my fears and shared in my laughter and tears. We have always been close but this shared journey has brought our relationship up another level - how could it not. I am so lucky to have a sister who is also my best friend!

Thank you for everything. Your messages on this blog have helped me get through the dark days, and made the sunny days even better. I have learned so much throughout this journey but nothing more important than how truly blessed I am to have such wonderful family and friends.

XOXO

5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
And if I have to eat another salad, I think I will start to grow rabbit
ears. I just can’t do it! I love food and consider myself well-versed
around my kitchen but I have fallen short of finding new and exciting ways to
eat kale, spinach, and all the other leafy greens that have been proven to be
so good for us (and not to mention getting my two kids to eat them as well). <span style="color: black; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">As a working mom and breast cancer survivor, I need something that will allow me to eat healthy foods in a way that's fast and easy.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So let me set the stage for you…I am at BJs for my monthly
stock-up of the essentials. You know,
toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, giant packages of socks – and
pretty soon my shopping list becomes null and void because I just have to get
the commercial size package of brownie mix and the 12-pack of marinara
sauce. My shopping habits beside the
point, I head down the small appliance aisle for reasons unknown to me. And there on the shelf, in all it’s blending
beauty, is the Ninja. It is like a
blender on steroids. It can chop, blend,
and create things like no other regular blender can. I had to get it! This was the solution to all my dietary
needs!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">All the ingredients for the "Green Monster" Smoothie

Now my shopping cart had to get filled some more. I buy bananas, berries (organic of course),
kale, spinach, cucumbers, all everything else I could think of that would work
to make SMOOTHIES! I check out and as
soon as I get home, I unwrap the Ninja and create a fruit and veggie-packed,
delicious, colorful smoothie. It
couldn’t have been easier.
Here at the Ellie Fund, we are getting Red Carpet Ready for our own Oscar Experience Boston Gala!

Our friend and incredible fashion stylist Christina K Pierce has been kind enough to share her expertise with us. Here she outlines last year's red carpet style misses with thoughts on how to make them better:

When looking at Oscar considerations for 2013 I always like
to take a look back and see what some of the “misses” were and how they could
have been avoided. Of course “best” and “worst” dressed lists are always
subjective and seem to vary by the source, there is typically one major theme –
gorgeous celebrities who ALMOST got it right.

Take Emma Stone for example:

While
the dress is pretty, it is almost too much for the small framed starlet and
ages her! I would have much rather seen her in something a little more
contemporary and edgy. Red with red hair? Not my pick! If we were to style
Emma, here is a couple of our top picks:

What we like about the green to the left– you get the same effect that Emma must have been going for with the bow but with this
Giambattista Valli, the starlet wouldn't look like she is choking. Also the
texture and subtle print to the dress make it slightly edgy and the emerald
shade of green would play off her red locks perfectly! The black and white
Oscar de la Renta may look like an illusion but this dress certainly wouldn't have aged her. Pair with a gold vintage belt for the right amount of
juxtaposition and Emma would have emerged as more of a style icon.

For our next actress, we took a look at Sandra Bullock who
was THIS CLOSE to perfection.

much prefer this selection:

The soft color would have played off Sandra’s milky skin and
dark hair as perfectly fitting as it was on the runway model. Also, the
waistline embellishments are definitely more flattering and give Sandra
something more unexpected than her last season’s choice. You never can go wrong
with Chanel!

I firmly believe every Mom deserves to take time out and focus on herself to maintain her mental health. Usually when I try to do this however, I lose the intended “me-time” by succumbing to the unrelenting pull of the practical, the time-sucking and the mundane: grocery shopping, housekeeping, laundry, yard work, car repair, child care, pet care, husband care – you get the picture.

But wait! There's more. To prepare for the winter holidays, there's Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, and today: Giving Tuesday. All very well and good but here's the fact: Cancer doesn't take a holiday.

When you have cancer, the best gifts fight and ease the effects of the disease, provide comfort and hope, allow for families to focus on each other rather than the minutia of their "new normal", and provide moments of peace and joy despite uncertainty and fear.

As you prepare for the holidays ahead, we hope you will embrace the giving spirit of the season by finding a place in your heart for the families who rely on our critical support services, and making a donation to the Ellie Fund (here) now or in the future.

Because cancer doesn't take a holiday, your gift is equally important to us on a Thursday in March as it is this December. And any time you make a donation in honor of a loved one or friend, it's our pleasure to send a special card that gratefully acknowledges your gift, and explains how your donation directly benefits a local family in need.

The home room reps took the idea to the student counsel and voted. Passing unanimously, every student who dressed down on October 25 wore something pink and donated a dollar to the Ellie Fund to help local families who are struggling with breast cancer treatment.
Every student who donated was given an Ellie Fund car magnet and you can find the magnets on many of the lockers. The boys are proud of their efforts and so many of their fellow classmates who supported their idea, helping to raise $450. Way to go guys. "Life's challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they're supposed to help you

Here at the Ellie Fund, we love to feature and support organizations that fight against cancer right along side us.

The cancer journey for me personally has been one of self-discovery. I thought I knew who I was and where my life was heading, but it wasn't until I had to face cancer and my own mortality that I truly learned what living was about. I didn't do this on my own however. I needed help getting to that point where I could let go of the anger, the frustration, the guilt, and the vulnerability and move on. The help came in the form of a Colorado-based, non-profit organization called First Descents.

First Descents offers young adult cancer fighters and survivors a free outdoor adventure experience designed to empower them to climb, paddle and surf beyond their diagnosis, defy their cancer, reclaim their lives and connect with others doing the same. In 2012, they held rock climbing, whitewater kayaking and surfing programs in the U.S., South America, and Central America.

I've taken part in 4 First Descents' camps since 2009. I have learned to whitewater kayak on rivers in Montana, Colorado, and Idaho. This past October I went on a 10 day journey to Peru where I rafted the Apurimac River, completed a 3-day Lares Trek through the Andes Mountains in which I climbed to an elevation of 15,016 feet, and visited Machu Picchu along side 11 other young adult cancer survivors and several First Descents' staff members, including the founder of this amazing organization, Brad Ludden.

First Descents has truly changed my life.

Because of First Descents, I am able to trust my body again and realize that I am now even stronger than I was pre-cancer. I have done things that I never would have even considered doing pre-cancer. I can kayak class III rapids with confidence and climb 3,000 feet in vertical elevation on my own two feet; I can LIVE. I can live in the moment and not dwell on the past and worry too much about the future. The road to the discovery of my true self has been an amazing one.

The third full-time member of our fundraising team, Rachel will be in charge of new business development, sponsorships and more.

Rachel has been a friend of the Ellie Fund since 2008 when she and her husband Matt hosted a bowling event in memory of Matt's Mom to benefit our mission. She stayed in touch over the years, and helped with sponsor solicitation for last year's Oscar Night Boston Gala. When we asked if she would ever leave the corporate world, she replied only if it were to work for the Ellie Fund. Voila! Our great partnership was born.

Originally from Vermont, Rachel's a Northeastern Univeristy alumna who focused her career on radio sales before moving to AMP Agency where she thrived as their Director of Business Development.

Her quick wit, can-do attitude, and wicked sense of humor fit right in with our team, plus she's ridiculously smart, strategic, and passionate about our mission. We look forward to Rachel helping us reach our $1M goal by 2015. To send her a friendly welcome or inquire about her love of cats, Newport, RI or cheese, you can reach her at rsegien@elliefund.org.

I can't let this week go by without reflecting on the tragic events that happened 11 years ago. I am sure you remember where you were when you heard the news; I don't think that is something that is ever forgotten. I was teaching a fifth grade math class in Dover, MA when the principal walked in, and without a word, handed me a note. I can still feel that pit in my stomach grow as I watched and listened to the events of September 11, 2001 unfold that day and in the weeks that followed.

There is something else I cannot forget about that time either. I remember the acts of compassion, kindness, and selflessness that were demonstrated on that day in particular and in the days, weeks, and months afterwards. We all found ourselves part of something bigger than just us as individuals. We were a family, a community. We were strong and found strength in each other. We found the courage to survive in the face of tradegy. We were reminded that we are in this world together, and together we can make a difference.

Let us never forget that sense of community we all felt then and hopefully still feel today.

Life is full of storms. From hurricanes all the way down to the small rain shower, we have all found ourselves in the midst of something that threatens the safety, security, and foundation we have built our lives on. Going through life, we all have a basic outline as to how we want our lives to play out. Sometimes these storms come out of nowhere and into our lives, like a thunderstorm in the summer.

Breast cancer was a full-blown, unwelcomed monsoon that came into my life with no warning. All of the sudden I found myself standing in the middle of this storm, wondering which way I should go. How do I get out of this storm? Where can I take cover? I couldn’t run. I had to face it head on and ride it out, doing whatever I had to do to keep myself safe and protected. I did what I had to do to save my life – surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and more surgery. Those were all part of the storm, waves that I had to swim through to get to the other side.

Now that I am through my “storm of the decade,” I have perspective on what I went through. I adjusted my sails in the storm and chose a new route. This new route I am on is so much more fulfilling. It’s full of love, selflessness, and compassion. One of the best things to come from this storm, has been the ability to work for The Ellie Fund. The Ellie Fund was my umbrella through my storm, keeping me dry and protected. I have now made a life of doing as much good in the world as I can. It feels good. I love the new route I am on and wouldn’t trade it for anything right now.

This week marks the 5th anniversary of my very last radiation treatment which wrapped up the active treatment phase of my cancer journey. The two pictures below were taken exactly 5 years apart...one from that summer 5 years ago and one from this summer.
We are excited! The past month has been a month of physical growth for The Ellie Fund. Not only did we add another Patient Services and Database Coordinator but we also moved our office! The address remains the same but this office is nothing like our old one. For starters it is HUGE (better yet, our old office was tiny)! We basically doubled our square footage from the previous one and added separate work spaces for each of us. All of us now have privacy and s-p-a-c-e to do our work.

We are still putting the finishing touches on each space but here is a sneak peek at what one of the spaces looked like
Well, yes, it IS about time. We’ve been busier than ever lately. Over the past two weeks we added a new colleague and moved our office. And now that we’re (almost) done with that, we have time: To be more efficient, thanks to the new phone system. To hear ourselves think, thanks to the divided workspaces. (Previously, five of us shared 500 square feet.) To help more breast cancer patients and families than ever before, thanks to our new staff member. And yes, finally…time to blog.
Say Hello to AnneAnne Meisner, from Natick, MA, is our new Patient Services & Database Coordinator. You’ve seen this photo of her on our website from when she was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago. Anne will be working with Director of Patient Services Gail Fine taking care of patient needs, and creating, maintaining and nurturing our new database.

Anne is no stranger to the Ellie Fund. She was one of the first patients I worked with when I started our current program, was the first speaker at our inaugural Kelley for Ellie fashion show, has been a dedicated event volunteer, Board Member, and great friend. She’s also a strong supporter of First Descents and Sharsheret. We’re thrilled to have her on Team Ellie! You can reach her at anne@elliefund.org.Anne Meisnerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01578056128598412801noreply@blogger.com0
